FAQs

Olympic Games

  1. How long has Coca-Cola been associated with the Olympic Movement?

Coca-Cola has been a supporter of the Olympic Movement for almost 100 years. As the longest running Global Olympic Sponsor since Amsterdam 1928, Coca-Cola has been involved with every edition of the Olympic Games - for both summer and winter sports - since then. We are also a founding sponsor of the Paralympic Games. From 1992 until the present day, we have sponsored the Olympic Torch Relay, helping to spread the excitement of the Olympic Games in a worldwide celebration. We believe the Olympic Movement is a force for good in the world, bringing people and countries together, and we are proud to use our name to raise the profile of the Olympic Movement.

  2. Why does Coca-Cola sponsor the Olympic Games?

Coca-Cola has been the longest running Global Olympic Sponsor since 1928, with a commitment through to 2020. We are a business, and so part of the reason for our sponsorship is to build awareness for our brands and the wide choice of quality and refreshing drinks we offer consumers. We sell non alcoholic hot and cold drinks at all Olympic venues during the events. Coca-Cola also shares the Olympic Movement's vision of connecting people with sport, and we are committed to promoting active, healthy lifestyles, increasing participation in sport at every level. Without the support of Coca-Cola and the other Worldwide Sponsors, as many as 170 of the 200 National Olympic Committees would be unable to send athletes to compete.

  3. How is Coca-Cola helping to make London 2012 the greenest games ever?

Coca-Cola is already working closely with London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) to understand how we can promote recycling within the venues and are looking at every aspect of our Olympic Games plans - from the uniforms our staff will wear to the type of fridges we use to chill our drinks - to ensure we reduce our environmental impact wherever possible. Coca-Cola has already been hailed as green sponsors by the organising committees of the summer and winter Olympics of Sydney, Salt Lake City, Athens and Turin. Greenpeace awarded us the 'first green medal' of the Beijing Games for our environmentally-friendly cooling systems and our local water community projects. We are aiming to divert 96% of our rubbish away from landfill at London 2012, and most of the drinks that we will supply during the London 2012 Games will be manufactured at our plant in Edmonton, just a few miles from the Olympic Park.

  4. What steps is Coca-Cola taking towards improving the carbon footprint of its Olympic sponsorship?

Coca-Cola is committed to reducing our environmental impact and using our Olympic partnership to inspire our consumers and partners to do the same. We were the first drinks brand to publish the carbon footprint of our iconic products, allowing consumers to see, for the first time, the carbon footprint of a can or bottle of Coke, Diet Coke and Coke Zero. We have launched 28 Recycle Zones across the country, to encourage people to recycle on-the-go and we hope to have almost three times this number by the time the Olympic Games arrive in London.

Greenpeace awarded us the 'first green medal' of the Beijing Games and we will be using this experience to ensure London 2012 is the most sustainable games ever. Managing our carbon footprint is an important aspect of this, and we will seek to reduce carbon emissions wherever possible through technologies such as HFC-free refrigerators, energy management systems and low emissions transportation. We already know the carbon footprint of our UK manufacturing operations - as well the footprint of our bestselling drinks - and will use this knowledge to help us manage our impact at the Olympic Games.

  5. How is Coca-Cola encouraging active healthy, lifestyles through its sponsorship of the Olympic Games?

Coca-Cola has a long history of supporting active lifestyles in the UK. Powerade's 'Take to the Streets' initiative provides support to a range of events including the Great North Run. In keeping with the London 2012 Legacy vision to help get Britain active, Schweppes Abbey Well - Coca-Cola's bottled mineral water and the official water of the Olympic Games - has a year-round on-pack promotion offering free swimming. For every free swim redeemed, Coca-Cola also donates £1 to projects to encourage people to get active.

We offer consumers a wide choice of drinks in different pack sizes, and also provide front of pack labelling so they can make an informed decision on what drinks are best for them and their families. We know from previous summer Olympic Games that about two thirds of drinks consumed by visitors will be water or juice. We will therefore be providing a wide variety of drinks including still, sparkling, low and no sugar drinks, 100% juice, water, sports and energy drinks to the millions of spectators visiting the Olympic site.
