  3. What is aspartame and is it safe?

Aspartame is a low calorie sweetener, approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar. It is non-cariogenic (this means it doesn't cause tooth decay) and one of the most thoroughly tested ingredients in the world.

Rigorous scientific evidence has shown that it is a safe ingredient for use in food and drink, approved by European and local regulators. At Coca-Cola, we sometimes use it in combination with acesulfame-K to give a more sugar-like taste, without the calories. It helps us provide more options to people who enjoy our products.

  4. How much caffeine is in Diet Coke, Coca-Cola and Coke Zero?

There is 96mg of caffeine in one litre of Coke Zero or Coca-Cola and 128mg in a litre of Diet Coke. This equates to about 32mg in a 330ml can of Coca-Cola and 42mg in a 330ml can of Diet Coke. To help put this in context, a mug of tea contains about 75mg of caffeine and a mug of coffee provides about 100mg of caffeine.

So the levels of caffeine in Coca-Cola are actually relatively low in comparison to other drinks. But if you want to avoid caffeine or reduce your intake, try Caffeine-Free Diet Coke or one of our other caffeine-free brands, such as Fanta or Sprite.

  5. Do you use additives in Coca-Cola?

We do use additives in some of our drinks, including Coca-Cola, to make sure they're the best possible quality for you. Additives are used to provide flavour and colour which contribute to the appeal and enjoyment of every can and bottle. And they're not necessarily artificial - traditional additives include sugar, spice and salt. Coca-Cola has always been made with all natural ingredients, ever since it was first invented by Dr John Pemberton in 1886. As with all our ingredients, we only use additives that are known and proven to be safe.

  6. What are additives and why are they in your drinks?

An additive is an ingredient used to provide flavour and/or colour to our drinks. Many additives, such as E numbers, are present naturally. For example, an apple contains 11 E numbers, while there are only two in Coca-Cola.

If a food additive has an E number, this is assurance that it has passed safety tests and is approved for use throughout the EU. This approval is monitored and reviewed in the light of new scientific data. In order to be authorised it must be demonstrated that an additive is both harmless and useful. The E reference for each additive refers to Europe and shows that the additive is authorised in Europe. In effect, the E is a guarantee of safety. Find out more about E numbers.
