Serpentine Gallery selects Coca-Cola chairs

111 Navy Chairs made from reused Coca-Cola bottles chosen by award-winning architect

Serpentine Gallery

The annual design of London's Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is a yearly experiment in architecture and landscape. This year, Coca-Cola's new 111 Navy Chair, made of at least 111 recycled plastic Coca-Cola bottles, has been selected for the cafe space of the Pavilion.

The 111 Navy Chair is a joint venture between Emeco and Coca-Cola and highlights the importance of recycling and the idea of recycled material as a valuable resource. Jean Nouvel, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect and designer of this year's Serpentine Gallery 'Red Sun Pavilion', will embrace this message by using 40 of the chairs.

111 Navy Chair facts

  • It was modelled after the original aluminium Emeco Navy Chair designed in 1944 for the US Navy
  • Each 111 Navy Chair contains a mix of 60 percent rPET plastic (recycled polyethylene terephthalate plastic) and a special combination of other materials including pigment and glass fibre for strength
  • It is estimated that more than three million PET plastic bottles will be repurposed annually for the production of 111 Navy Chairs
  • The chairs are available in six colours: Coca-Cola Red, Snow, Flint, Grass, Persimmon and Charcoal

Liz Lowe, Citizenship Manager, Coca-Cola Great Britain said: "We're delighted that Jean has selected this beautiful 111 Navy Chair for The Red Sun Pavillion. This project is part of Coca-Cola's vision to recover and reuse all of our bottles and cans and another example of how our packaging can have real value through recycling to be used again and again. We hope to bring this message to even more people through this placement."
